PROJECT: Road marking, Stud and Symbol Asset Survey

Road marking, Stud and Symbol Asset Survey by ATM-AMAC

National Highways are responsible for overseeing the network management and maintenance in the south-east areas 3 and 4. National Highways approached ATM-AMAC to provide asset management surveys to show the retro-reflectivity performance and condition of road signs, road markings, studs and symbols. Our survey information informs the development of subsequent maintenance and renewal schemes.

Challenge

To provide an asset inventory and marking and sign retro-reflectivity testing across the network, without incurring costly traffic management or creating disruption to road users.

ATM-AMAC submitted a mobile road sign survey proposal. The survey vehicle has the capability to capture road signs at road speeds of up to 70 mph on motorways; measuring the retro-reflectivity of the signs background, legend, GPS position and the dimensions, height above the carriageway. i.e. collecting a full asset inventory as well as road marking, stud and symbols.

The ATM-AMAC system operates at night to enable realistic, repeatable and accurate data recording with reduced traffic disruption and no requirement for traffic management.

Results

The analysis tools within the ATM-AMAC system enable reports to be examined by condition and asset type categories.

ATM-AMAC provided raw data (excel), visualisations on a web-based display using our data viewer software, GIS shape files and KML.
